Ireland Launches International Education Mark, ELT Sector Criticizes Costs
Sep 11, 2024Ireland is launching its TrustEd Ireland mark for English language schools and higher education institutions in September. The mark, confirmed by Minister Patrick O'Donovan, aims to position Ireland as a top destination for international education. The mark will become mandatory by 2027 for institutions recruiting non-EU students.
The English language teaching (ELT) sector is pushing back against what they describe as "excessive costs" associated with the scheme. The initial application fee could reach €30,000, with ongoing annual costs up to €20,000, which sector leaders argue threaten their financial viability and competitiveness.
MEI, representing English language providers, has decided to withhold participation until the fee structure is revised, citing concerns over transparency and financial impact.
A formal launch event is scheduled for September 25.
