UK Tightens Visa Rules Amid Rising Asylum Claims

Mar 30, 2026

The UK government has announced stricter visa measures following a sharp increase in asylum claims linked to certain student visa routes.

According to the Home Office, asylum applications from students of four countries surged by 470% between 2021 and 2025, with these nationalities now representing the highest proportion of asylum claims relative to visas issued.

As part of the new measures, the UK has also suspended work visas for nationals of Afghanistan.

The Home Office reported that asylum claims originating from legal entry routes have more than tripled since 2021, accounting for 39% of approximately 100,000 asylum applications submitted last year.

Among the countries affected, Myanmar recorded the highest number of student visas issued in 2025, while asylum trends showed particularly sharp increases across multiple nationalities.

Key data highlights include:

Afghanistan: asylum claims reached 95% of the number of study visas issued

Myanmar: asylum applications increased 16-fold between 2021 and 2025

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood stated that while the UK remains committed to protecting those fleeing conflict and persecution, the visa system must not be misused.

The government emphasized that these measures are intended to preserve the integrity of the immigration systemwhile continuing to offer genuine protection to those in need.

These developments signal a more restrictive and closely monitored visa environment, particularly for applicants from high-risk regions.

For prospective students, this underscores the importance of:

Submitting strong, genuine applications

Choosing credible institutions and programs

Preparing for increased scrutiny during the visa process
