United States ends “duration of status” for F and J students
Jul 30, 2026The United States has introduced a major change for international students and exchange visitors. Beginning September 15, 2026, students will generally be admitted for the duration of their academic program, up to 4 years, rather than remaining under the previous “duration of status” system.
Students whose programs require more time may need to apply formally for an extension of stay. This is especially important for doctoral students, students changing programs, and those whose studies take longer than originally planned.
